Looking for a unique historical experience? Look no further than the Calhoun Colored School! Here are 5 reasons why it's a must-see destination:
1. Founded in 1892 by two New England women in partnership with Booker T. Washington, the school provided education to rural black students in an era of segregation.
2. The school sponsored a land bank and joint venture with the county to improve a local road, helping families buy land and get their products to market.
3. Despite adhering to the industrial school model common at the time, the school raised its standards, offered an academic curriculum, and created a large library.
4. The principal's house, the only surviving original building, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of the school's importance in the history of education of African Americans.
5. Although the school closed in 1945 due to financial difficulties, a documentary titled "Calhoun School, The Way to a Better Future" produced by the Harmon Foundation in 1940, celebrates its rich history and legacy.
